Carlenzoli and Associates Receives Two Awards for Civil Engineering Excellence
Canon Manor West Assessment District Project Honored
Carlenzoli and Associates has been selected to receive both a Merit Award and a Small Firm Honor Award in the 2007 Civil Engineering Excellence Award Competition of the Consulting Engineers and Land Surveyors of California (CELSOC). The awards ceremony will be held on January 22, 2007 in Sacramento.
The Canon Manor West Assessment District project was unique in the amount of challenges it offered. It involved the design of infrastructure improvements for a 1956 228-lot residential subdivision in which 120 homes had already built without public sewer, water, paved roads, or drainage. Nitrates from septic systems were polluting wells. Hidden PG&E cables installed underground were in the way of proposed infrastructure improvements. Some landowners wanted the improvements, and some didn't. The biggest challenge was to stay on budget, already fixed in 2000 by the Assessment District.
Carlenzoli and Associates used extraordinary engineering solutions and people skills to satisfy 228 diverse landowners, the County of Sonoma, City of Rohnert Park, and all government regulations. With increased engineering, design streamlining, and cost-saving innovations, they stayed within the original budget, saving the County millions in potential cost overruns. The results were a modern, reliable infrastructure, upgraded property values, and an improved living environment.

Low Impact Development Continuing Education Workshop
Greg Hurd recently attended a CELSOC Continuing Education Workshop for Low Impact Development (LID). LID is a relatively new design practice that attempts to unite site planning, land development and storm water management with ecosystem protection. LID is a comprehensive development and design technique that strives to preserve predevelopment hydrology and water quality through a series of small-scale, distributed structural and non-structural controls.
The workshop has been delivered to the California State Water Resources Control Board, The Environmental Protection Agency and countless local agencies across the state and the nation. The objectives of the workshops are to provide alternative design approaches for complying with the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Phase II, community development, and watershed pollutant load management.
Kids Street Theater Parking Lot, Santa Rosa
Carlenzoli and Associates contributed engineering and permitting services to facilitate reconstruction of the Kids Street Theater Parking Lot in Santa Rosa. Kids Street Theater was developed to provide a safe and educational environment to help children without homes and other "at-risk" kids break the cycle of self-depravation and poverty. Kids Street serves middle schools and applies for grants through private foundations and philanthropic organizations as well as depending on personal contributions of time, money and materials from hundreds of people who believe in the philosophy of Kids Street Theater.
In conjunction with Santa Rosa's Sunrise Rotary Club, Carlenzoli and Associates coordinated the design and permitting services to gain approval from the City of Santa Rosa for the reconstruction of a deteriorated parking lot serving the Kids Street Theater. Carlenzoli and Associates then presented the project to the North Coast Engineering Contractors Association (ECA) for consideration of a "community relations project." The ECA embraced the philosophy of Kids Street Theater and the project. They have begun to donate the materials and services of their members and affiliates to complete the project.
